In the late 1950s, Frank Wooten started Wooten Metal in a dirt-floor chicken barn with a hand brake and a sheet-metal shear. With help from his wife and three sons, the small sheet-metal shop became synonymous with customer service and creative problem solving. Upon landing large clients, including Southwestern Bell, the company incorporated in 1960 and moved to Oak Cliff in 1965. Wooten Metal invested in employees and equipment, gaining commercial customers. These included Collins Radio, for which it made test chambers and built ductwork for the company’s military radio plant.
